Piracés Village

Watchtower, town
and viewpoint of the plain

It's a place of the province of Huesca, located in the Hole (Hoya de Huesca), at the right margin of the channel of the Cinca river. It has over 110 inhabitants and the altitude is 453 meters on the level of the sea. It's from Huesca 13 kilometers. Its inhabitans are named piracesanos.
We part from Huesca by the highway of Novales and once we have exceeded Monflorite and Albero Alto it is necessary to take the deflection to the left hand. Piracés is only 13 kilometers from the capital, within the Hole, on the right margin of the channel of the Cinca, that has taken its sowing of green by the surroundings. The water built the miracle, in spite of being earth located in the confluence of the Flumen and Guatizalema rivers.
The urban nucleus is located in a slope, along, with some simple buildings, in its majority of poor material, with predominance of adobes. Exceptionally the rubblework and the sillar stone occurs also. The climate is benign, superior to the 13 degrees of annual average, and it usually is a determining factor in the construction.
It`s told that in the place a medieval castle was raised. The rocky outcrop where it was the strength, with very remarkable defensive characteristics, has later brought an interesting archaeological findings of diverse times, between which emphasize several ends of arrow in silex. To the south of the population another similar deposit exists, denominated «El Portillo» (“the Opening”).
There is a cross of term of the century XVIII, planted very well, that calls the attention to the traveller. The piracesanos (inhabitants) feel proud of that small monument, like they are so by a rain tank, that also show, of irregular plant, with vault of tube and exedra.
The parochial church, in acceptable state of conservation, is dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol. It consists of a ship divided in three sections, with chapels in lateral side and a polygonal apse. It is covered with crossed starred vault. The bell-tower rises with four bodies, the superior is added, perhaps with the eagerness to obtain a greater height. It is a work of century XVI.
A greater antiquity has the hermitage of Our Lady of Corona, of century XII, romanesque, transformed into the XVI. It has a single ship of five sections, with lunetos and pointed vault.
The town holidays are celebrated the 3 of May.

The population has descended respect from principles of century XX, that got to add 254 inhabitants, census who stayed, with slight variants, until 1950. The emigration, nevertheless, seems braking already definitively, although without experiencing increase. The 110 inhabitants of the present time think that the proximity with the capital prevents a greater demographic development.
Many are the things that in Piracés surprise. If we tried to arrive at it by the deflection when Monflorite town is passed, by that very narrow road, after surpassing a few curves, that space that is opened before us will call the attention, showing a lowest dry river bed, a small canyon with capricious geologic stratified terraces and formation in forms and colors. We will become absorbed in that contemplation, and we hardly will realize of which to our backs is that mass, huge and challenging, that is the “Piedra del Mediodía” (“stone of the Noon”), quiet raised and all-powerful before our eyes.

In the town already, clean streets, recovered and taken care of houses, with some of recent and modern factory. It does not lack some construction that the passage of time has lead to the ruin. The Stone of the Noon has been left a little back when we showed ourselves to the other slope of the town. There it can be contemplated from the height, the South plain by where the channel of the Cinca runs, descrying itself also some near towns: Albero Alto, Callén, Tramaced, ...
