The Turbón ( the Vilas and the Castle )

[ December 2002 ]
The Turbón,
an excursion to the castle

  (To see the plane)

The Turbón constitutes one of the most outstanding reliefs of the PrePyrenean Aragonese, by its isolated situation and its high summit of flat aspect, but that reaches the 2,492 ms.
It is oriented of North to the South, dominating by the East the basin of the Isábena river and by the West, the depression of Campo. It is formed by a great anticline failed in its East flank and modeled fundamentally in marls and powerful calcareouss banks of cretaceous age that give vertical escarpments of more than 500 ms. Its flora, with abundant endemics, is of great 'geo-botanical' interest.
The Vilas of the Turbón, is municipality of Torre la Rivera, with not many more than 40 inhabitants; of 1,378 m. of height, about 124 kms. from Huesca. They are called vilenses. We will arrive by Campo; by a asphalted road of 18.5. of length, with the constant reference of the Turbón. The town is based in the skirt of the mount, between two precipices and thus it is divided in old and modern helmet. The old one is lost no its rancid character, emphasizing Casa Garuz (it was replied in the Spanish Town of Barcelona); the new one, agglutinates all hosteleria that demands minerals waters (indicated in renals deseases) so credited.
A bath constructed at the beginning of century XX exists: building of two plants, with stone walls. The parochial church also is of recent construction, reason and a great interest does not demand; it is dedicated to Santa Eulalia.
The Excursion. With the exception of the Winter, can be made almost everything the route in `all land car', arriving until the PLANA del Turbón, to follow walking. Until SERRATE it is arrived by the highway of local or regional importance Campo-Vilas del Turbón..
Once passed the deflection of Llert, the highway cross a river Rialgo to enter itself later in congosto of Eixea (Ejea) and to reach the town of Serrate (that is to the left in the same skirt of the bulk). Near here, it divides the track that leads to the REFUGE of the La Plana del Turbón.

The datum point continues being Serrate, but the track that is due to take, parts of the highway before arriving at this town, if it comes from Campo; nothing else journey half kilometer of asphalted track, the branch is taken from the left and by it is due to continue without paying attention to other bifurcations, until the way to us becomes impossible to journey (of not being a 4 x 4), reason why it will be followed by foot.
Thus it is reached PLANA DEL TURBON (2,000 ms.) at that it has been arrived nothing else to enter in a full vegetation and to leave the right, the source of the Pedreńa. From the refuge of the Plana, the way is due to take that leads to an ample channel that appears to the left of the summit and that finishes in a col. The footpath is crossed that leads to the source of the Plana and the ascent already begins until the crest, and of there to the summit, by a narrow footpath or by the dividing one. This is the most direct route to reach the Castle of the Turbón (2,492 ms.) although, there are others (Colladeta of the Turbón of d'Alt for example).
  San Úrbez Bridge
The excursion to the Castle of the Turbón, lasts of 4 hours by foot (walking), from the beginning of the track to the same castle. The landscape lets to see plots of earth, worked by the man for the cultivation, that have been left and occupied by all class of vegetation: aliagas, blackthorn, boxwood, subalpine grass, without some endemics (nomeolvides, for example). There are curiosities, like for example, ` Covas de las Gotelleras' that can be found if the fourth curve to the right is taken, following a way. They are caves in which it falls permanently dripping water. Behind the Refuge of the Plana, there are karstics dolinas (round land depression) with multiple cracks that the ferns have covered.
